Cooling

A cold front will move across the South Coast late this afternoon with elevated freezing levels giving snow to the alpine and rain at times mixed with snow to lower elevations of the North Shore mountains. Drier conditions and lower freezing levels are expected in the wake of the front tonight. An upper disturbance will cross the region Saturday into Sunday giving a few flurries to alpine regions.

Tonight.. Snow tapering to flurries early in the evening then clearing.
Alpine low minus 8.
Snowfall amounts near 2 cm.
Freezing level valley bottom.
Mountain top winds southerly 30 to 50 km/h with gusts to 70 km/h becoming southwest 20 to 30 km/h in the evening then southeast 10 to 20km overnight.

Saturday.. A mix of sun and cloud. Chance of a flurry near midday. Snowfall amount trace.
Alpine high minus 5.
Freezing level 900 metres.
Mountain top winds light and variable.

Sunday.. Cloudy with sunny periods. A few flurries.
Snowfall accumulation 2 to 5 cm.
Freezing level near valley bottom.

Monday.. Periods of snow.
Snowfall accumulation 5 to 10 cm.
Freezing level near valley bottom.

Tuesday.. Cloudy with sunny periods.
60 percent chance of flurries.
Snowfall accumulation trace.
Freezing level near valley bottom.

5 Day Trend..Behind the trough on Sunday afternoon a weak ridge of high pressure will give a brief period of dry conditions before another system brings snow to the South Coast mountains on Monday.
Cool and unsettled conditions will develop behind the low on Tuesday.
