Alpine Forecast Whistler

Posted on Wednesday, February 25, 2009

A low pressure centre affecting the region will make its way from Vancouver Island southeast into Washington state by this evening. The first significant snowfall in quite some time across the region will begin to wind down as the low moves south tonight.

Colder Arctic air is also becoming more entrenched across the area on the wings of a cold front moving southwards across the South Coast mountains. The accompanying cold dry outflow winds will help to shunt the cloud and snow out of the region later tonight and Thursday along with a return to sunnier conditions. Some residual cloud may linger in the Mount Seymour area however.

Tonight..Periods of snow easing to a few flurries overnight.
Alpine low minus 19. Windchill minus 25.
Snowfall accumulations 2 to 5 cm.
Freezing level valley bottom.
Mountain top winds west 30 to 40 km/h shifting to east 20 km/h early this evening. Winds northeast 20 to 30 km/h mid-mountain.

Thursday..Cloudy with sunny periods becoming mainly sunny in the afternoon.
Alpine high minus 6. Windchil minus 25 in the morning.
Freezing level valley bottom.
Winds northeast 20 to 30 km/h shifting to southwest 10 to 20 km/h late in the afternoon.

Friday..Cloudy with afternoon sunny periods.
Freezing level near valley bottom.

Saturday..Cloudy. Snow developing late in the day.
Snowfall accumulations 2 to 5 cm.
Freezing level rising to 1000 metres.

Sunday..Periods of snow mixed with rain below 1200 metres.
Snowfall accumulations near 10 to 15 cm.
Freezing level 1200 metres.

5 Day Trend..A weak push of marine air will give some cloudiness and slightly milder temperatures to the region on Friday. The next frontal system will arrive late Saturday. A strong southerly flow associated with this system will bring rising freezing levels and a changeover to rain or mixed rain and snow at lower elevations and near the coast.
